Lemonade Mouth: Disney's Pre-Fab Band Hits it Big

Posted by Shirley Brady on April 27, 2011 12:30 PM

Three years ago, Disney Channel was called "the greatest teen-star incubator since the NBA stopped drafting high schoolers."

But with Miley Cyrus moving on to Lindsay Lohan-land, the High School Musical stars now college-age, the Jonas Brothers morphing into the Jonas Men, and (most recently) Demi Lovato quitting, Disney Channel needs new stars.

Luckily, a Disney original movie about a fake band appears to have spawned the real deal.

Lemonade Mouth, a Disney Channel comic movie about a band of the same name, debuted on April 15th. Last week, its soundtrack reached #4 on Apple's iTunes album sales chart.

Today, when Nielsen SoundScan publishes its weekly album-sales ranking, the Wall Street Journal projects that "the top five is likely to include the Foo Fighters, British vocalist Adele and Lemonade Mouth—a band that doesn't exist, except in a made-for-TV movie." (Good call: Lemonade Mouth indeed debuted at #4.)

The movie is slated to run three more times before being released on DVD on May 24th. Disney executives are monitoring Lemonade Mouth's progress closely to see if it indeed has another tweentastic, money-printing franchise on its hands. It appears they do. As WSJ reports:

If Lemonade Mouth maintains its current interest level among its preteen audience, company executives say, it could spawn a miniature industry of sequels, perhaps even a big-screen adaptation, more albums by cast members and perhaps even a concert tour.

"We always say the audience will tell us how far we can go," said Gary Marsh, Disney Channel's chief creative officer. "We're probably two to three weeks away from knowing the staying power."

Some fans are unwilling to wait. Last week an online petition began circulating, demanding that Disney let them see the group in the flesh. "If you are a fan of Lemonade Mouth and wish Disney will make a tour, please sign this petition!"

The movie's stars, meanwhile, aren't waiting for the whims of fate to decide their future.

Hayley Kiyoko, a young actress who plays one of the Lemonade Mouth band members, and some of her co-stars staged a flash mob at the Apple store in The Grove in LA before the movie debuted. They performed one of the movie's signature tunes (Determinate) before being shut down by store security, and posting the video (at top) on her YouTube channel.

The Praise You-like stunt's clip went viral after Ashton Kutcher tweeted it to his 6.6 million followers:

Even with the help of the Mouse, today's young Disney stars not only need to have an abundance of talent. They need social marketing and digital savvy — and the moxie, it seems, to "determinate," as the song goes.

Cast of Disney's "Lemonade Mouth" starts flash mob at Apple store

It was another quiet afternoon at the Apple retail store at The Grove in Los Angeles, CA -- or as quiet as an Apple store can be on a busy day -- when all of a sudden, a flash mob began singing and dancing the song "Determinate" from the Disney Channel production Lemonade Mouth over Easter weekend.

Chris Brochu and Hayley Kiyoko, two of the film's stars, organized the surprise appearance with about 15 of their friends and captured their entire performance on video. The choreographed song and dance number drew a mix of befuddled and delighted looks from shoppers and ended when three unfortunate Apple employees were inclined to politely escort the mob out of the store.

This weekend's flash mob by the cast members of Lemonade Mouth is one of the latest in-store performances by Apple shoppers captured on video and published to the video-sharing website YouTube. With its chain of well-lighted retail locations filled with internet-connected Macs, Apple often draws aspiring and professional actors, singers and dancers to its stores. ifoAppleStore, the blog for all things Apple retail, offers a look at some of the many in-store videos shoppers have published over the last few years, including a mashup of iJustine clips, lip-syncing children, a performance by a teen singer known as "tr3vor" and more.

Lemonade Mouth is a musical film produced for the Disney Channel that follows five high school students who meet in detention and form a band to help them each overcome their shared and individual obstacles. The made-for-television movie premiered on April 15, 2011.

Official Disney Press Release For LEMONADE MOUTH

PATRICIA RIGGEN SET TO DIRECT “LEMONADE MOUTH,”
A MUSIC-DRIVEN DISNEY CHANNEL ORIGINAL MOVIE

Award-winning film director Patricia Riggen, who directed the critically acclaimed “La Misma Luna” (aka “Under the Same Moon”) and this week presents her short film, “Revolución” at Critics’ Week in Cannes, will direct the music-driven “Lemonade Mouth,” a Disney Channel Original Movie.

The “Lemonade Mouth” script was written by April Blair based on the popular novel by Mark Peter Hughes. Executive-produced by Debra Martin Chase (“Just Wright,” “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” Disney Channel’s “The Cheetah Girls” movies), it will begin production in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in July.
In making the announcement, Ms. Martin Chase said: “Having Patricia at the helm of this movie is a dream come true for me and a testament to the climate Disney Channel creates for a flow of new ideas, interesting talent, creative risk-taking and willingness to explore new areas — all essential for our business.”

A native of Guadalajara, Ms. Riggen worked as a newspaper journalist in Mexico, then as a photographer, before moving to New York City to attend Columbia University’s Masters Film program, where she pursued her interests in screenwriting, producing and directing. Her first documentary was 2002′s “La Milpa,” followed by 2004′s “Family Portrait,” which won the Short Filmmaking Award at Sundance and the Best Documentary Award at the Aspen Film Festival.

Riggen’s “La Misma Luna” premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and was quickly acquired for worldwide distribution by Fox Searchlight and The Weinstein Company. It was released theatrically as “Under the Same Moon” in March 2008, setting records for a Spanish language film opening in the U.S. It is the third-highest grossing Mexican film of all time in the U.S. and the fifth in its own country.

Casting is underway for “Lemonade Mouth,” a script about five teens from different walks of life who meet in detention and go on to form the greatest high school garage band ever. The ensemble features Olivia on vocals, Stella on electric guitar, Wen on keyboards, Charlie on percussion and Mohini on bass guitar, and their wide-ranging music, from pop to rock and hip hop to soul, ultimately brings them together as friends and inspires their classmates to speak up and be heard.

The over 80 titles in the Disney Channel Original Movie franchise are the ratings success stories around the world. In the U.S., across all basic cable, the DCOM franchise has produced basic cable’s #1 movie with Kids 6-11 and/or Tweens from 2002-09 (“Cadet Kelly,” “The Cheetah Girls,” “Halloweentown High,” “Twitches,” “The Cheetah Girls 2,” “High School Musical 2,” “Camp Rock” and “Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie,” respectively).

Lemonade Mouth 2 Press Release

This is the press release announcing the Lemonade Mouth 2 DCOM, as well as a DCOM about Disney Channel's Shake It Up television series;

DISNEY CHANNEL ORIGINAL MOVIES “LEMONADE MOUTH 2″ AND “SHAKE IT UP” IN DEVELOPMENT

Disney Channel announced at Licensing International Expo 2011 that Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) “Lemonade Mouth 2,” the sequel to the hugely popular movie, is currently in development, along with a DCOM based on the hit buddy comedy series “Shake It Up.”

The music-filled kid, tween and family movie “Lemonade Mouth” is a dynamic story in which music intersects with themes of communication, personal development and empowerment. Central to the core storyline are five teenagers who are profoundly changed when a music teacher motivates them to throw “what-ifs” out the window, pursue their true passion, form a band and, ultimately, seize the opportunity to express their unique selves – despite lack of support from the school administration. After premiering in April as the year-to-date’s No. 1 cable movie in Total Viewers and No. 1 television movie with Tweens 9-14, in its 16th telecast, ”Lemonade Mouth” is still going strong, again ranking No. 1 for the day among Kids 6-14 and Tweens 9-14.”

“Lemonade Mouth 2″ will reunite fans with Olivia, Wen, Stella, Mohini and Charlie, and feature all-new music.

The hit buddy comedy series set in the world of a tween dance show, “Shake It Up, Chicago!,” has generated development plans for a DCOM debut. The comedy series features two high-spirited characters, best friends CeCe Jones and Raquel “Rocky” Blue, whose dreams of becoming professional dancers are realized when they become background dancers on the most popular teen dance show, “Shake it Up, Chicago!,” a gig they land thanks to their longtime and well-connected friend, Deuce. Between learning a wide range of new dance styles, navigating the backstage antics at the show (especially with their rivals Tinka and Gunther) and their newfound social status at school, the girls experience new and fun adventures, some that test their friendship.

“Shake It Up” is TV’s No. 1 series with Kids 6-11 (1.8 million/7.3 rating) and Tweens 9-14 (1.6 million/6.7 rating), and through its first 17 original airings, is pacing as the No. 1 cable series of all time with Tweens 9-14, 2011 to date. [Source: NTI, 12/27/10-6/12/11, US ratings, based on trackage data with minimum 6 telecasts.]

Disney Channel has presented more than 80 movie titles in its DCOM franchise since 1997. From the first movie, “Under Wraps,” to 2007′s record-breaking “High School Musical 2″ and “Camp Rock,” the DCOM franchise has connected with the millions and millions of kids and tweens who watch them every night. In the U.S., across all basic cable, DCOMs dominate the ratings, having produced basic cable’s
No. 1 original movie telecast among tweens for nine consecutive years and the No. 1 movie in Total Viewers for four consecutive years, an indication of strong co-viewing by kids, parents and families.

The highly anticipated DCOM “Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension,” based on hit animated TV series “Phineas and Ferb,” is set to premiere FRIDAY, AUGUST 5 on Disney Channel, SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 on Disney XD and also on the ABC Television Network (date TBD).

DVD Review Lemonade Mouth

Directed by: Patricia Riggen
Cast: Bridgit Mendler, Adam Hicks, Hayley Kiyoko, Naomi Scott, Blake Michael, Christopher McDonald
Running Time: 1 hr 53 mins
Rating: NR
Due Out: May 24, 2011

PLOT: A group of high schoolers start up a rock band after they’re sent to detention in the music room.

WHO’S IT FOR? If High School Musical was trying to sell the concept of high school to kids in elementary school, then Lemonade Mouth is aimed at middle schoolers. Boys and girls that are actually in high school won’t dig this one (or at least, they shouldn’t).

MOVIE:

Thankfully, Disney hasn’t dished out another form of the singing dollhouse that defines the sparkly and squeaky-clean High School Musical franchise. Lemonade Mouth gets its designer jeans a little dirty, as it plays with a fuller and larger list of characters, and even the most “Disney Princess”-like of characters (Mendler) isn’t given a definitive lead treatment. The word “revolution” is tossed around a couple of times, and the story even makes a small statement about supporting small businesses over large corporate sponsors. At one point, someone even says the words “Bon Jovi.” Could Disney finally be opening its mouse ears to the cries of teenagers who have left Camp Rock and the Jonas Brothers in hopes of messages that might be more honest? No, not really.

This “revolution” of Lemonade Mouth is most directly comparable to when Kelly Clarkson moved on from From Justin to Kelly bubble gum to “Since U Been Gone” angsty guitar-driven pop rock. For example, a slightly sweet little tune like “More Than A Band” might be “written” by the rebellious girl of the group, Stella, but it sounds like a leftover from the High School Musical songbook. (Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens could easily be imagined singing it). The band starts with a piano rock sound, then moves to pop rock as spiced up by rap, and ultimately lands in some current “Top 40″ territory that maybe the likes of Katy Perry have left unmarked. Everyone can dance, sing, play an instrument, though we hardly see them actual sit down and practise.

Despite the newer focus on students being able to play instruments, musicianship itself is not a respected concept. Songs that are not performed on stage are “written” in the moment in which they are played, and the labour-heavy concept of learning to play an instrument and subsequently practising it are completely undermined by Lemonade Mouth’s mission to sell music entirely as an image. Cheap electric guitars of the world, prepare to be bought, and then abandoned. As I whined about in my rant on last month’s Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure, a sort of freakish Barbie doll epilogue to the High School Musical saga, musicianship is still formed into an accessory with Lemonade Mouth, and success with such efforts is made to be guaranteed. This is aggravating to any human being that’s both been to high school, and is also aware of the frustrating realities when it comes to comprehending music. Don’t forget, those songs are really written by forty-year-old men.

However “alternative” Lemonade Mouth might be as compared to High School Musical, its presentation of the world is still extremely guarded. At times the fantastical elements can be sprinkled too heavily. Leave it to Disney to make a rock revolution appear much too sweet.

MOVIE SCORE: 5/10
