Is Lemonade Mouth the new High School Musical?


Naturally people have compared the two. It’s flattering considering the success of High School Musical but this isn’t a musical, as such. It’s about a band, so the songs are performed rather than spontaneous. It’s maybe aimed at a slightly older audience.

How was your US accent?

Interesting. I’d never auditioned using a US accent before. Luckily they thought I was good enough and I just went for it. Hopefully I did all right. I didn’t have any training, I had to learn on the job. There was a sound guy who would say after a take: ‘That sounded British.’ That was as much as I got.

What did you struggle with?

I had to say: ‘I have to go to AP class.’ I kept saying: ‘I have to go to a plea class’, because I didn’t know what an AP class was. I asked at the time but I’ve forgotten. It’s a mystery. Sometimes my words got muddled but, on the whole, it wasn’t a problem.

As a British person, was it difficult to find your inner Disney cheese?


I understand what you’re saying. This is feel-good but it does have an edginess Disney hasn’t done before. It has a good story and the music isn’t cheesy – it stands alone.

What inspired you to want to become a performer?

I’d always put on little shows at home but when I was 11 I did a community event in Woodford, where anyone could go. You had three days of vocal training and performed your song at the end. I sang I Say A Little Prayer. It’s a tough song to sing but they gave me the confidence to go for it and belt it out. It was the first time I’d sung and they thought I wasn’t bad.

You’re doing a Steven Spielberg dinosaur show, Terra Nova. Are you a dinosaur expert now?


We interact with CGI dinosaurs and have animatronics as well – they look so real it’s scary. I should be an expert but I’m not. I’m improving. I know about the TED conference now. It’s this thing where scientists are making chickens into dinosaurs. It’s really interesting.

Have you worked with Steven Spielberg yet?


He’s one of the executives and we film in Australia. Sometimes we’ll be on set and we’ll be given props and the director says ‘that’s a Spielberg prop’ that he’s specified he wants in the shot. We’ll be like ‘oh wow’ and are thrilled to be holding an apple he’s asked for.

Is Kelle Bryan from Eternal still your manager?


She’s my agent. She’s a right sharp cookie. I was singing at an event when I was 14 when she approached me. She said: ‘I know you can act’ and ‘Disney will eat you up.’ And Disney UK was my first job. It’s weird to look back on moments like that. She’s had a lot of experience, so gives me advice on how to present myself or perform. She’s brilliant. None of my family are in the industry so it’s good to have someone like that.

Some Disney performers, such as Demi Lovato, have gone off the rails. Are you worried that will happen to you?


There are too many people around keeping me grounded to go off the rails. I’m my own person. You can’t generalise about people. I’m aware of the decisions I make and the responsibility I have as a role model. I wouldn’t disregard that. It’s a privilege. That’s not to say people don’t make mistakes – we’re all human. No one’s perfect. I’m just going to be myself.

Where do you see your career going?


Wherever I want it to go.

You’re pretty confident then?


At the moment I’m doing Terra Nova, which is amazing. I want to pursue music in the future but I’m taking it a step at a time and making sure I’m constantly growing.

Hayley Kiyoko is the talented young star that dazzles crowds with both her acting and singing skills. Hayley proves a girl can do it all with big dreams and talent to match. You may remember Hayley as Velma Dinkley in Scooby Doo! The Mystery Begins or on the hit shows Unfabulous and Wizards of Waverly Place. Hayley already has quite the acting experience and she is also part of the all girl group The Stunners. Watch for Hayley in her upcoming role in Lemonade Mouth, a Disney original movie. Meet the girl behind the acting and the music with Glitter Magazine’s exclusive interview!

When did you know you wanted to get into singing and acting?

HAYLEY: There was never a specific moment where I was like ‘I WANT TO SING AND ACT!’ lol… I’ve just always loved to perform. It’s been in my blood since day one.

How did you get your start in both?

HAYLEY: Well my parents bought my first drum set when I was 5 and that began my voyage into music. From there on I continued to play drums, then learned guitar and piano. I would write songs and record them on my 4-track cassette recorder in the garage. Gosh, that sounds like such an ‘old school’ gadget!!! Lol. I was in many school plays and musicals and did a lot of dance after school. In 7th grade I got a commercial agent and booked my first audition. But acting was always just something I did on the side to make money for college and music equipment. I never thought in a million years I would be starring in a movie a couple years later.

What is more fun for you, to sing or act?

HAYLEY: Honestly, I just love performing in general! When you are shooting a movie and/or performing on stage in an arena, the gratification is a completely different process. They are both challenging and
exhilarating in their own ways.

Your energy is amazing! How was it touring with Justin Bieber?

HAYLEY: Let’s just say I had A LOT of material to write in my journal, in a good way! It was one of the most amazing experiences, ever. The energy, the crowd, the crew, the ‘belieber’, so many great memories.

Can you tell us about your role in LEMONADE MOUTH?

HAYLEY: Of course!! I play the firecracker, Stella Yamada. She is the ring leader of the band and convinces everyone to stand up for themselves and others.

What can we expect from the movie?

HAYLEY: A very touching journey about friendship, triumph, and change. With a dope soundtrack!

Can you tell us more about your character?

HAYLEY: She is a vegetarian, makes her own t-shirts and is OBSESSED with lemonade, a.k.a. SISTA STELLA!!

What’s on your playlist right now?

HAYLEY: Marina and the Diamonds, Adele, The Civil Wars.

Who are some of your favorite designers and where do you like to shop?

HAYLEY: Hmmmmm, well Neiman Marcus holds the key to all of the awesome designers, Vince, Marc Jacobs … I personally love to shop at Diesel, LF, Zara, Free People and I also love vintage clothing.

Your hair is so cool! How do you get it to look so fab?

HAYLEY: Aww, thank you!!!!! Hair is so much fun because it always grows back, Lol! My hair wouldn’t be the same without my Sebastian taffy wax.

If you could have a shopping spree at any store which would it be?

HAYLEY: ZARA!

Any advice for Girls Who Rock who want to sing or be in a band?

HAYLEY: Make sure you get along with the people in your band and support each other. If you are all in a band, you all have a common goal, so don’t let little dramas or hiccups get in your way. And the most
important thing, COMMAND THAT STAGE!

Disney's 'Lemonade Mouth' the sequel? Cast says 'It's all up to the fans'

The cast/rockers of The Disney Channel original film "Lemonade Mouth" are basking in the wild success of not only the movie, but the music itself.

Since the movie's April 15th release on The Disney Channel, the film has become cable's No. 1 original movie of 2011 and has reached over 20 million total viewers. The soundtrack recently hit No. 1 on iTunes and No. 4 on the Billboard 200 top album chart, ranking right up there with Adele, "Glee" and Foo Fighters. Not bad company to be in.

Zap2it spoke with the cast of "Lemonade Mouth" including Bridgit Mendler, Adam Hicks, Hayley Kiyoko, Blake Michael, Nick Roux and Chris Brochu, as they prepared to meet with fans and sign some autographs at Downtown Disney Event on Monday (May 2).

So with the roaring success of what we hope becomes a franchise for the Mouse House, is there a sequel in the works?

Among a chorus of "Hopefully!" "We hope so!" and "Fingers crossed!" responses, Michael says "It's all up to the fans, it's in their hands. If people enjoy it and they love it and they want more, they'll get it."

When asked if Disney might be ready to green light the project, Michael continues, "I think Disney is just a great organization in general and they're always one step ahead of the game. So you never really know what's gonna happen."

Personally, we'd love to see these kids hit the road for some live performances. Apparently, they share the same sentiment.

"We would love to do that," Mendler gushes. "We performed for the first time live on 'Good Morning America' as a group and it was a blast!"

NEW YORK -- Hayley Kiyoko and Naomi Scott are the next generation of Disney Channel starlets, and these BFFs are getting a crash course in signing autographs, security guards and singing on live TV.

Makeup artists color their lips while others are doing their hair, and stylists have rolled racks into a Manhattan hotel from which they can choose their wardrobe.
They hit the media circuit last week before the TV movie "Lemonade Mouth," about kids forming a band, debuted Friday. But if this whole experience has been "just weird, just crazy" -- Scott's words -- dressing the part hasn't been.
Kiyoko, 20, seems poised to become a fashion force, gravitating toward funky styles, wearing a leather cowboy shirt and shorts with tights. She even pulls off the leather fanny pack that she feels fairly passionate about. ("I love the fanny pack because I hate bringing those Mary Poppins big bags everywhere," she says. "I can wear this and keep my stuff safe and I can always reach my phone and lip gloss.")
Her taste is "left of center," and while she enjoys very much the self-expression that comes with fashion, the shopping part is mediocre, she says. The maximum time limit at the mall for this Los Angeles-area native is 90 minutes.
Scott would rather be shopping for candy and other sweets, although she likes the occasional spin through a Zara or an AllSaints shop. "Fashion" isn't really her thing, she says, although she's quickly realizing that paying attention to her clothes, and her beauty and grooming routines are all part of her job.
Looking good exudes a confidence that she hopes her new tween fans will learn, she says, but she wants the emphasis to be on a good, healthy outlook, not on perfection.
Scott has the unfussy, effortless look that so many strive for. As a Londoner, the 17-year-old says she has well-developed preferences for darker colors and subtle shapes, but she doesn't mind something quirky, either. On this day, she's wearing a gray-print, tank-strap tunic top and chunky flat boots -- and an oversized pink alligator pendant.
She doesn't know the designer of the red-and-champagne-colored dress she has picked for the premiere. One of her most prized fashion possessions are an old pair of lace-up, Victorian-style boots that her aunt gave her.
Even though Kiyoko is more daring in her style choices, Scott says she likes that her friend always roots things in purpose rather than trend.
Back to the fanny pack: "What makes it cooler about Hayley wearing it is that she's choosing it because it's practical. She doesn't want to look like she's trying," Scott says.
Kiyoko is happy, however, to wear the label of "unexpected."
"People don't know me yet, so it's harder to do 'unexpected,' but that's what I want. I want to be a little edgy," Kiyoko says.
She recalls spending her first paycheck -- for an OnStar TV commercial when she was in the seventh grade -- on all-over gold sneakers by Gwen Stefani's LAMB brand. She fancies that as she grows her career, she'd like to do it all like Stefani: music, modeling and her own fashion brand.
"If there's one person I think she's going to be like, it's Gwen Stefani," cheers Scott. "She's got the whole package."

Being a musician myself, I am always curious about the instruments used by bands, real or in a movie. I thought I would take a look and identify the guitars used by Mo, Stella and Olivia in Lemonade Mouth.

Adam Hicks raps his way through Disney’s Lemonade Mouth

Fans of Disney Channel best know Adam Hicks as goofy skateboarder Luther Waffles on the sitcom Zeke and Luther. With his new movie Lemonade Mouth (out on DVD May 17), the Las Vegas-born actor wanted to reveal a different side of himself to his fans, which showcases his many talents, including singing, rapping, dancing and playing keyboard. The Las Vegas native also co-wrote three of the songs for the film’s soundtrack and  contributed his own rap verses to “Determinate,” “Breakthrough,” and “Livin’ on a High Wire.”
Hicks, 18, who is also known for roles in The Shaggy Dog and How to Eat Fried Worms, spoke to Tribute about his passion for music and his experience working on Disney’s latest high school musical.



When did you first become interested in music?
Hicks: My dad grew up in Essex in a small town and he grew up with The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and David Bowie so he had a big influence on me. When we drove to auditions from Las Vegas to L.A.—because I started acting when I was seven—he would just play all this old school music for me. He had this big Denali and it had super-loud speakers. So that was a big influence for me. And then I started to write music when I was in fourth grade. I was introduced to rap because Las Vegas has a big hip hop culture and growing up I just loved the words and how words connect with each other, and I just started writing constantly. I remember for fourth grade for my talent show, I wrote a rap for the whole school. And in fifth grade I was just working and constantly writing. Being able to combine my two ultimate passions of writing and acting into Lemonade Mouth was kind of amazing.

 

Where did this passion to become an actor come from?
Hicks: I always had a curiosity for human nature and how people react. When I was in fourth grade I was involved in a program, pretty much a theater type of thing. We did a Tom Sawyer play and there was a whole bunch of local agencies and managers and they got in contact with me and I started doing local stuff in Las Vegas. And then I finally got an offer for an interview in California with an agency and started just working and climbing a ladder. The first thing I did was Titus [he played 5-year-old Dave], which was this television show that was on Fox for three seasons.

How did you become involved with Lemonade Mouth?
Hicks: Disney contacted me to ask me if I could write music for the movie, which was amazing. I went to the auditions, and in the first audition, I read the script. In the script, it gives you three scenes, and I was trying out for Wen. I was looking it over it said “Wen starts singing” and  “You can pick any song you’d like to sing for the audition.” And so instead of singing a song, I wrote a rap. I wrote this really detailed rap about my character, Lemonade Mouth and the whole band, and in the middle of my audition I just broke out into this rap and it worked really well. When I came back the next day for a callback the script had been re-written and Wen became a rapper.

So you spawned a character change. Congratulations.
Hicks: Thank you!

 

What makes playing Wen so much fun?
Hicks: I mean, coming from a character on  Zeke and Luther where I play this really outrageous character who has so many elements to him with no boundaries to transition into Wen, who’s more chilled, relaxed, very musically-inclined, I could relate more to him in so many ways. I love music and bringing my own kind of flavor to a chilled and relaxed character was a good transition for me personally as an actor and to show my fans.

What was the biggest challenge for you during the making of the film?
Hicks: The biggest challenge was probably taking away everything I had learned from [playing] Luther. This whole project was such a big deal for me, and I put so much into it. Before we started filming, Christopher Scott, the choreographer, really formed us and made us feel like a band. Lemonade Mouth is a band on-screen and off-screen. Everyone in Lemonade Mouth can play their music and can sing and rap. We’d be on camera playing music and then we get home to the hotel, and we would keep rocking out and doing music. So the hardest thing for me was to let it drop, and get that different kind of energy into a character.

What is your best piece of advice for young musicians and actors trying to make it into television, film and music?
Hicks: My best advice is that it really has to be a passion of yours. If it’s a part of you, no one can stop you. You have to definitely have to love it to that extent. Stay true to the art, that’s the whole creative part.

 

What are some of your future plans?

Hicks: We’re getting so many responses for Lemonade Mouth, just to read the Twitter mentions and see how the fans are reacting. I feel like Lemonade Mouth is trying to start a revolution just like in the movie, and we’re trying to go on tour. A lot of people talk about Lemonade Mouth 2, and we don’t know but we’re keeping our fingers crossed. Me personally, I’m just making music. I’m doing a song for Disney. It’s called “Burning Up,” and it’s going to be the summertime anthem, which is awesome. So I just recorded that, and then I have a song dropping on the Disney Channel sitcom Shake It Up.
